The King`s Road over Filefjellet

110 km norwegian nature and history

When visiting friends in Vang (Norway) I came across a signpost mentioning "The King’s Road over Filefjellet".

No fixed plans and all the necessary gear in place I decided to go for it.

Awarded the EU prize for Cultural Heritage in 2017, the King`s Road winds 100 km between the barren landscape of the mountainous Filefjell and the lush farmlands close to Lærdalsøyri. It not only offers an excellent hiking experience but also a deep insight into Norwegian history and culture. Built in the 1790s, it was the first “arterial thoroughfare” connecting Eastern and Western Norway suitable for horse carts.
